Refreshed by the sea breeze, leaning coolly against the Shark River Inlet and Atlantic Ocean, Belmar was established in 1872 by a group of twenty five investors looking to build the next great resort town. It being the golden age of tourism along the Jersey Shore, Belmar, originally named Ocean Beach, faced steep competition from other vacation destinations. Savvy as they were, the towns founders realized that, while places like Long Branch and Asbury Park also had their Atlantic shores, no other resort towns had the incredible fishing offered by the Shark River. By 1873, only a year after the towns founding, hotels like The Ocean Beach House were already filling up, mostly with wealthy industrialists from New York City and Philadelphia. In 1889 the town was renamed “Belmar,” French for “Beautiful Sea,” and by 1890 more than seventeen new and glamourous hotels like The Columbia and The Atlantic were built and booming. By the dawn of the twentieth century, Belmar was one of the most popular resort towns in New Jersey, known across the Northeast. In the decades since, the town was divided and subdivided, making way for bustling neighborhoods and highly rated public schools.
Today, Belmar remains a premier spot along the Jersey Shore, catering both to nightlifers and those looking to simply relax on the beach. Shark River remains a bountiful fishing spot while the pristine Atlantic coast continues to attract beachgoers from across the state. With unobstructed beaches lining three of Belmar’s four corners, the smooth ocean breeze zips through, keeping everything crisp, cool and smelling like vacation. Enjoy fine dining along the waterfront view at D'jais Oceanview Bar & Cafe or head to the Marina Grille for live music and drinks. Whether strolling along shimmering Silver Lake or picnicking at the riverside in Maclearie Park, there’s something for everyone in Belmar. If that’s not enough, head out to neighboring Avon-By-The-Sea or nearby Asbury Park for even more shopping, dining and entertainment. Centrally located and with one of the highest rated school districts in the state, come to Belmar and live on vacation.
